Frugal innovation for smart and collaborative cities

Frugal innovation focuses on developing good quality solutions that significantly reduce costs and adapt to local needs. This article provides an analysis, supported by literature, of the emerging concept of frugal innovation and its relationship with smart cities, taking into account three fundamental aspects: the base of the development pyramid, which conditions the need to obtain solutions ecological and friendly; resource constraints, which stimulate innovation and technology that enables capabilities to overcome the challenges of resource-constrained environments. By combining the experiences of two ongoing projects, key findings are obtained to support frugal innovation in order to achieve smart and collaborative communities and cities, in a context of limited resources.
