Design of a short-term financial management strategy for a construction contractor under study

Abstract

The research work was carried out in a construction contractor company belonging to the OSDE of Construction Design and Engineering (GEDIC). Deficiencies in working capital were identified as the main problem, proposing the design of a short-term financial management strategy, based on a comprehensive characterization and diagnosis of the organization to determine the causes of financial problems. For the diagnosis, a prospective analysis was performed by the MICMAC and SMIC-PROB-EXPERT methods. The fundamental problematic is determined from the cause-effect diagram in which the causes that gave origin to it were defined, analyzing through a matrix its relation with the seven elements of the Model of the 7'S of McKinsey. A comparative analysis of the economic-financial behavior of the years 2015 and 2016 was carried out, from which the necessary and optimal working capital was determined for the company's operations and the financial strategies to be followed. The scientific methods used were mainly: documentary review, surveys, interviews with experts, SWOT analysis and prospective analysis methods with which it was possible to determine the effect and the main weaknesses of the organization.
